COMPUTER TASKS: YOU DO's
1-Go to Learner.org and select 2 vidoes or lessons and post the videos or lesson into your WIKI and this exam and explain HOW you would or could use them with students, BE CREATIVE!!!
http://www.learner.org/resources/series165.html?pop=yes&pid=1753# - This was awesome! The opening sequence shows a teacher with her students and they are looking at a costume that was worn by someone in time. Then students had to look at it and come up with a description of who might have worn it, why and even where. Great promotion of creativity as well as learning.
http://www.learner.org/resources/series32.html# - Another great way to teach math. He takes storytelling and imagination and combines them to teach the math. The students don’t even realize that they are learning math, because they are so involved in ‘the act’ it’s wonderful. Anything that can teach students one thing, by using another thing is good in my book.
2-Go to YouTube, Yahoo vidoes, Teachertube and find ONE video that you feel helps SUPPORT the use of software, hardware in lessons and class projects. Please add comments as well. WHy you chose the video and YOUR ideas.
( make sure you have created your OWN free Teacher tube account- good site becuase it is edited for content and school use)
http://www.teachertube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=4dc94d5749d44d4c6c73&page=1&viewtype=&category= - Besides being partial to the Animaniacs and remembering watching this on tv, this really is a great way to help students learn. Not only is it visual but the song is catchy too. It uses a variety of ways for all the different style of learners. I would definitely use something like this in the classroom.
3- Select 5software applications or WIDGETS that you discovered during this course-
attach a link to them here on the TEST and explain in detail how you would use each of them in your teaching.
1. www.Slide.com – This allows you to arrange a various amount of photos into a slideshow. You can use this for storytelling. Have students take pictures using a digital camera of an everyday activity and then have them post it onto slide.com and make a show and have the other students try to figure out what they are trying to tell.
2. www.Voki.com - On this site students can type-to-speak which means they can type a phrase and then create a person that will say what you type. You could use it in the classroom by having all the students remain silent and then play instructions for them to complete and see how many can follow the directions and complete the task.
3. www.Blog.com – Here is a site that you can type a daily journal. While many teachers would frown upon this because it would stop students from learning proper handwriting it would help them with the writing in general and they would probably enjoy this much more than writing thus do a better job. This could be a daily thing, an online journal if you will.
4. www.Surveymonkey.com – Here you can create surveys that can be taken. You could have students make up surveys that could ask other students questions in a ‘get to know you’ project in the beginning of the year.
5. www.xtranormal.com/ - Here you can make mini movies and even write the script. You could have students use this site to make a movie that would teach other students something. One thing would be math problems or something along those lines.
ESSAY
Thus far I have been very happy with the amount of information that I have learned during my time in the Educational Technology class. I always felt comfortable in and around the computer and internet but with the constant growth of the internet and technology itself, even I have learned a ton of new information. A few of the things that I have learned thus far are how to operate my own personal website, various software widgets and how to use said widgets in the classroom. I’m sure there are many other things I would be interested in learning that I don’t even know exist and I hope that those things happen in the second half of the semester.
I had a web presence prior to entering this class through the extremely popular social networking sites Facebook and Myspace. However as a future educator such sites are frowned upon by many current educators and education systems due to all the bad press they have received. On our first night though I learned of another type of web presence that was much more professional, pbwiki.com. Similar to Facebook and Myspace I was able to create my own web-page but with less direction and more creativity. Here I was able to put together a portfolio of all of my work that could one day be used to show future job prospects what I am capable of.
Widgets are different programs that you can add to your wiki that allows you to personalize it to give others an idea about you. For example on my wiki, since I am an avid sports fan, I have included a widget that gives the top headlines in sports for that day. I also have a calendar and clock and in keeping with the sports theme a sports photo of the day. The other thing that is possible is to show different online programs that you could use in the class room with the students. For example I have a link to voki.com which is a voice manipulation program where you can make characters say what you want. You could have the class come in and have a dog tell them that the first thing they are to do today is to write an entry in their journal.
One other notable thing that I learned in the class thus far is that technology is open to interpretation. While I mentioned above that Facebook and Myspace are quite often frowned upon, there are some teachers that can use it to their advantage. Majority of the students in the classroom will be familiar with such social programs and if it keeps them interested why not figure out ways to use it for good because you know they are interested in it. All too often, we block off students from learning because of something that we ourselves are unfamiliar with it and thus we think it is bad. Maybe we as teachers could learn something from the students and use it to help them, which is the ultimate goal, yea!?
With the ever growing technologies available to us, learning will never stop, for teachers or students. The best thing that a teacher can do is to get on the ride, buckle up and try to take in as much as possible and then use it to better the students. Overall this class has taught me a lot so far and there is much more to come. The only thing that disappoints me is that I won’t be around next semester to learn all of the new information, although the internet is always readily available and learning new technology is only a click away!
